TAFE R&D showcases its findings at SAE COMVEC

Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited’s (TAFE) journey over five decades has been one that has always been focussed on the customer. It caters to the diverse needs of the customer from all around the world by providing relevant solutions. With a farm-to-lab approach, TAFE keeps stride with the dynamic needs of the customer with a proactive and keen interest in R&D.

This understanding was on show at SAE’s latest edition of the Commercial Vehicle Engineering Congress (COMVEC) when TAFE’s Mahendra Mohan PR – Senior Member (Transmission), R&D, presented a paper titled “Minimizing Tooth Mesh Misalignment in Heavy Duty Tractor Transmission”. With the theme of ‘connectivity’, the gathering is a global assembly of both on and off-road professionals. It’s a great platform facilitating valuable interaction amongst the community of engineers, supply managers and executives.

Tooth Mesh Misalignments originate primarily from its torque transmitting components such as spline connections, gears, shafts, bearings and housing. Mahendra Mohan’s paper is a case study of two factors influencing mesh misalignment: (1) bearing offset and (2) gear hub, as an initiative to minimize the amount of tooth mesh misalignment on gear pair. Advanced driveline analysis tools were used to analyze and calculate the amount of misalignment on the gear tooth mesh. The optimized gear pair showed more than 40% reduction in tooth mesh misalignment and more than 10% reduction in peak contact stress during initial design stage.

The paper was well received by the delegates. We wish Mahendra Mohan all the very best for all his future endeavours and congratulate TAFE R&D for consistently facilitating such papers – a sign of a learning organization!

TAFE tractors have proven their mettle in working with vivid soil conditions and for a wide range of applications to cultivate various geographies around the world. In addition to the 40 tractors, 40 disc ploughs, 9 disc harrows and 9 tipping trailers were also handed out to 40 clusters of farmers to increase production of milk in the cattle corridor districts of Lyantonde, Mitooma, Sheema, Ibanda, Isingiro, Mbarara, Ntungamo, Kiruhuura and Sembabule at the Mbarara Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute.

Hailing the farmers’ commitment to mechanization of agriculture, President Museveni said the farmers contributed 20 percent of the expense towards the procurement of the tractors and implements. Most of the farmers intend to utilize the TAFE tractors to plant pasture for cattle among other utility.

Built to the taste of the land, a TAFE tractor is synonymous with being tough and high standards of precision build quality; housing the expertise of TAFE acquired over decades of its being.

TAFE goes the distance with its service

TAFE’s customers are empowered to avail after-sales support and spare-part requirements at their desired location, pan-India notwithstanding any of the remote clusters. Through TAFE’s extensive service network, we extend our expertise towards servicing and maintenance of tractors and equipment, with the aim of providing extended and reliable performance. This is the mark of a company that has for over five decades strived to transform the lives of the farming community, with its products as well as its service.

Here’s one such story that delivers on this promise and more…

Kamal Ekka, a proud owner of an MF 9500 purchased from Jashpur, Odisha recently migrated to Sambalpur, Odisha approximately 260 km away for work. He largely used the Post Hole Digger implement with his MF 9500 tractor. Sometime last month, Kamal faced an issue with his tractor as it was due for service. Unfortunately for him, Sambalpur doesn’t have an authorized TAFE dealer.

Having tried other avenues unsuccessfully to sort out his predicament, Kamal approaches the local TAFE Customer Support representative for help. Without any delay, the very next day, a TAFE mechanic is deputed from Sarapali around 140 km from Sambalpur, to service Kamal’s tractor.

Not only was Kamal Ekka fully satisfied with the service, but so overwhelmed was he with the timely and crucial intervention by TAFE’s representatives that he has promised that his next tractor would most definitely be a Massey Ferguson tractor by TAFE (click image below).

Congratulations to the Customer Support team in Odisha for ‘Cultivating the World’ with their dedication and going the extra mile to delight the customer.

TAFE celebrates Pongal celebrating farmers and agriculture

Festivals are a time of coming together, families, friends, communities, societies, countries and colleagues. Pongal is the harvest festival from Tamil Nadu, India, celebrated with much love by Tamilians all over the world. It marks the beginning of the new the new Tamil month, Thai, and exalts the Sun God for a successful harvest. At Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited (TAFE), where the farmer is a friend and whose life we aim to enrich, Pongal was celebrated with much fan fare. It was a tribute and recognition to the farmer who is responsible for sustaining us all.

To start off proceedings, an interesting video which shed light on how society has forgotten the importance of Pongal with a dash of humour was played for everyone. The celebrations organized by the HR department included office versions of age-old traditional games and activities that have been part of the Pongal celebrations. The employees were first divided into random teams. These activities required the teams to perform traditional artistic forms of dance like Mayil Aattam, Oyil Aatam, Kolaattam, Thappattam, Gummi, Silambaattam, among others. The idea here was to get the team members to immerse themselves in these traditional art forms and soak in their significance.

The next team activity required each team to perform few lines of a given folk song with the accompanying traditional folk dance within ten minutes. For the final activity, people were guided to a separate location for ‘Uriadi’  (variation of Piñata) which was a hit among the participants.  The celebrations concluded with traditional snacks that tied back to the message of respecting and fostering our traditions, while remembering the farmer for their indispensable contribution to our lives. The HR department must be lauded for #CultivatingtheWorld with this well thought-out and considerate event.

TAFE shines at ISMA 2016, Leuven Conference – Belgium

Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited’s (TAFE) Shaik Mohammad Asif Basha K from the Centre of Excellence – Research and Development (R&D) department, presented a paper titled “Vibro-Acoustic simulation of powertrain components using a finite element technique and correlation with test data” at the 2016 Leuven Conference on Noise and Vibration Engineering held in Leuven, Belgium. The paper was co-authored by V Ravindran, Principal Member – R&D (NVH)* and Nageshwar Rao P, Chief Technology Officer – R&D.

The conference provides a forum for engineers, researchers and other professionals active in the field of modelling, analysing, testing and improving the noise and vibration characteristics of mechanical systems and civil structures. The conference combines expertise in the noise and vibration fields by stressing common measurement, modelling, analysis, and control technologies.

The objective of this study was to, reduce the radiated noise of diesel engine by 2 dB (A) in the frequency range up to 3 kHz. The engine speed is in range from 800 rev/min to 2200 rev/min and to investigate design modifications that would reduce radiated noise and vibration of the engine, whilst being cost-effective to implement. Simulation and test approach demonstrated reduced radiated engine noise. The NVH *(Noise, vibration, and harshness) performance of the baseline engine was evaluated using CAE simulation tools. Radiated noise from the crankcase, tappet cover, and timing cover were predicted and the critical modes having severe effect on radiated noise levels of the engine have been identified. The modifications feasible from a manufacturing point of view were considered and analyzed. The hybrid approach used has helped in reducing noise level by 2 dB (A) with 3% increase in weight of the engine.

Congratulations to the team and wish them the best for all their future endeavours!
